Meet Our Brokers
Rick JohnsonBorn in Detroit, Michigan, Rick grew up sailing on his grandfather's Alden Schooner and later, his father's 1969 C&C 35 (Hull #3). Rick has extensively sailed throughout the Great Lakes including numerous trips through the North Channel, a total of 31 Bayview and Chicago Mackinaw races, and even a few deliveries from South America.
Rick began selling sailboats in 1973, founded Active Yacht Brokerage in 1990 and later Tartan C&C Yachts Sales Michigan and, most recently, Tartan C&C Yacht Sales Chicago. Personal boats (in chronological order) include Custom Frers 38, Custom C&C 44, C&C 41, Allied 42 Yawl, C&C 37, Sabre 402, and currently a C&C 115 "Night Ops".

Bob Smahay
Bob left the lucrative world of commercial sales 24 years ago for the abject obscurity of sailboat sales. The last 24 years has widened his knowledge of both racing and cruising sailing yachts. Bob spends some of every year delivering boats all over the Great Lakes, east coast and the Caribbean. He has had his 100 ton Coast Guard license for 20 years, and is an ex ASA instructor. Bobs quote “It's the great people you meet in sailing that make everything worthwhile.”
Martin Grant
Martin was Born in Leicester, England. He has had an interest in sailing his entire life. Martin has sailed in the region of 35,000 miles in different parts of world during the last 32 years, including the Baltic Sea, North Sea, English Channel, around the South Coast of England, especially the Solent, which includes such major yachting centers as Portsmouth, Cowes (Isle of Wight) Southampton and the Hamble River. Martin attended and passed all of the Royal Yachting Association (RYA) sailing courses and was awarded the prestigious RYA Yactmaster Offshore Certificate with an endorsement to Instruct Offshore Sailing. He has managed the Royal Air Force Racing yachts Blue Diamond and Red Arrow, both Sigma 38's . Currently holds a USCG Captain's License along with an endorsement from the American Sailing Association for Offshore Sailing Instruction.
